The significance of Taftazani's logic in dealing with contemporary Islamic issues : a study on kitab tahdhib al-mantiq wa al- kalam

Abstract

This study is an analysis of the logic of Tahdhib al-Manṭiq, a handbook of logic by Saʿad al-Dīn Masʿud Ibn ʿUmar Ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Taftazani (d.1322). In this study, Taftazani’s logic has been selected as the subject of study because this handbook has not been studied and explored specifically and comprehensively. This study generally tries to analyse the essence of Taftazani’s logic in Tahdhib al-Manṭiq. Therefore, this study examines the background of Taftazani’s logic to study the contribution of Taftazani towards Islamic logic and its relationship and connection with Aristotle’s logic. Besides, this study tries to analyse the value of logic in dealing with contemporary Islamic issues, the significance of Taftazani’s logic and the importance of learning logic.The study's objectives are based on the textual content analysis method of qualitative research design. This study discovered the continuity of Aristotle's logic framework among theologians, as well as the establishment and development of Taftazani’s logic theoretical framework.
