Abstract

This study aims to prepare a concise and fundamental reference list of Arabic vocabulary at the intermediate level B1, based on the English vocabulary list of the same level, with the purpose of developing precise standards for teaching Arabic to nonnative speakers. The researcher employed the descriptive-analytical method to describe and analyse vocabulary lists in both Arabic and English, identifying similarities and differences, particularly in cases where Arabic lacks equivalents for certain English words. The contrastive method was also utilised to determine and analyse linguistic gaps in order to address them in a manner appropriate to the Arabic context. The research procedures began by collecting intermediate-level vocabulary from the Oxford B1 list, comparing it with common Arabic vocabulary lists, and analysing deficiencies and their causes. The outcome of this study is a practical Arabic vocabulary list for the B1 level, which can serve as a reliable reference for curriculum development and for enhancing learners’ linguistic competence at this stage. The researcher proposed alternative Arabic vocabulary items in consultation with a group of experts to create an integrated and academically reliable Arabic lexical list that can serve as a dependable reference for curriculum design and contribute to improving learners’ linguistic proficiency at this level. The findings highlight the importance of constructing standardised Arabic vocabulary lists based on comparative scientific foundations, thereby promoting alignment between educational content and learners’ needs, and enhancing the effectiveness of Arabic language teaching at the intermediate level worldwide. It is further recommended that future studies expand this effort to develop Arabic vocabulary lists for the remaining six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), contributing to a comprehensive and systematic framework for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers.
