Abstract

The premise of this research is that argumentative discourse in the visual media is a communicative discourse and an interactive argumentative linguistic work. It depicts argumentative discourse in an episode of the renowned live debate program “The Opposite Direction” aired from Aljazeera Arabic Channel for more than 20 years. Normally, two guests representing opinions of each side of the case being debated are invited to participate in the show. The episode under consideration for this research begins with setting up the conceptual framework for Pragmatics in Arab heritage and amongst contemporary Western figures, in an attempt to search for the historical roots of Pragmatics in Arab heritage and its applicability with the concept of Pragmatics today. As such, the research will explore the concept of communicative discourse, its elements and types past and new. It aims to shed light on the concept of pragmatics in Arab heritage and amongst contemporary Western figures. It will also trace the concept of communicative discourse, its elements and types. The effect of the elements of pragmatics in communicative discourse in media are also explored. For the purpose of this research, the researcher adopted the descriptive approach and the analytical approach, with the aim of analyzing the selected models from the “Opposite Direction” program at Al-Jazeera, from a pragmatic discourse analysis point of view. The researcher reached a set of results, namely: pragmatics is a linguistic lesson that has a critical analytical view of language when used in speech; that old Arab studies were aware of the pragmatic aspect of language; media discourse aims through words and accomplishments to change the position of the recipient and change his/her intellectual conviction towards an issue or asserting their position and consistency towards it; media discourse constitutes a rich substance for pragmatics studies; that reaching the intended discourse of visual media or success in the communicative process is impossible in isolation from the pragmatics perspective; that the argumentative discourse is based on links, verbal clues and logical means; and the role of the argumentative factors is to increase the argumentation load of rhetoric, and that the conclusiveness of the single word is manifested through three loads: semantic, contextual, and rhythmic
