Abstract

Tafsir, Islamic Exegesis, has developed through a series of interdependent stages in which every succeeding epoch was drawn from the preceding one, and whereby schools of Islamic exegesis depended on one another. Modern tafsir has a distinctive feature in stating and solving contemporary problems, namely those contentious issues in Tafsir, Islamic jurisprudence, theology, and Islamic canonical readings of the Quran. This research aims at investigating and analysing the preponderant statements by Muhammad ‘Izzah Darwazah, a prominent scholar in the field of tafsir, in his masterpiece entitled al-Tafsir al-Hadith: Tartib al-Suwar Hasb al-Nuzul (Modern Islamic Exegesis: The Classification of the Surats (Chapters) According to Precedence in Revelation). The research exclusively focuses on three Surats (Chapters)—al-Fatihah (the Opening), al-Baqarah (the Cow), al-Anfal (the Spoils of War) as a case study since they contain several legal issues and rulings that pertain to Islamic faith and transactions. The research uses inductive method to trace all the issues related to the subject matter of this thesis in addition to the writings of Muhammad ‘Izzah Darwazah. Additionally, the research uses analytical method to discuss the statements made by MuÍammad ‘Izzah Darwazah, to examine the views he deems as preponderant and to deduce the most important implications and denotations therein. The thesis is concluded with several findings, the most important of which are: Sheikh Muhammad ‘Izzah Darwazah is in accordance with the majority of scholars in most of the views he has chosen as preponderant despite using a different method, he is neither extreme nor biased in his act of selection he rather displays objective and unbiased attitude towards those issues that are intellectually a bone of contention, Sheikh Darwazah combines text or literal with opinion-based interpretations of Quran, and he classifies and then interprets the verses according to their respective themes. This approach has enabled him to have an in-depth understanding of the word of God, Most High, and to develop a more precise and unequivocal method in dealing with issues contained in his masterpiece—his book of tafsir .
