Abstract

This research aims to shed light on the declaration of polygamy, clarify its objectives in Sharia, and explore the obstacles and consequences related to polygamy in Afghanistan, followed by the identification of solutions considering the Quranic verses and prophetic traditions to overcome contemporary challenges. The research discusses the importance of polygamy and its role in addressing moral, economic, and social issues in Afghanistan. It also contributes to raising awareness among Muslims in general, and Afghans in particular, about the religious impacts of practising polygamy in Afghanistan, demonstrating that polygamy does not constitute oppression of women or a violation of their dignity, nor does it mean that men dominate women to satisfy their desires. Instead, it is, in fact, a right of women in society. The researcher employed the method of inductive, survey-based research in writing this paper, which involved gathering relevant materials, conducting interviews and observations, and analysing the data. The researcher collected data from interviews with professors, specialists, and community members, in addition to a survey conducted among youth regarding polygamy in Afghanistan. The analysis revealed varied opinions, with some considering polygamy permissible according to Islamic law, while experts emphasise the importance of fairness between wives. On the other hand, youth, particularly in urban areas, oppose this practice due to concerns about human rights and equality. The results of the "Salam Watan Dar" survey showed significant opposition from women and youth to polygamy. The research proved that benefiting from religious guidance, by referring to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet, understanding the status and rights of women, and adhering to the conditions of polygamy in Islam — such as justice between wives in terms of division, accommodation, and fair treatment, as well as the ability to provide financial support — can assist Afghan society in overcoming the crises related to polygamy and the associated social, customary, economic, and moral challenges. Additionally, the research provides evidence to counter the misconceptions propagated by Western institutions. It offers a clear path that ensures the interests of men, women, and society, thus enhancing the success of polygamy in contemporary Afghanistan.
