Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the dubbing of movies. It addresses the concept of dubbing as a type of audiovisual translation that relies on the concept of synchronization. Dubbing is to remove the screen characters’ utterances and replace them with utterances pronounced in another language. The study focuses on omission and addition as adaptation procedures made by the translator to the target text. Employing analytical-descriptive method, the study analyzed various models of omission and addition in translation selected from the historical movie “Lion of the desert” which first produced in English then dubbed in Arabic with the title “Omar al-Mukhtar”. The researcher chose this topic because previous studies published on omission and addition in dubbing did not provide enough models to determine whether the omission and addition processes will ultimately convey meanings of the source text and whether there is a relationship between omission and addition and synchronization. After reading the whole transcript of the movie, the researcher selected 30 models of omission in translation and 30 models of addition in translation in which “omission and addition in dubbing” stands out. The 30 models of omission were divided into three sections: omitting a word, omitting a phrase, and omitting a sentence. The 30 models of addition were divided into three sections: adding a word, adding a phrase, and adding a sentence. The researcher attempted to select the models that best represented the types of omission and addition in translation listed by linguists Eugene Nida and Henri C. Barik. The researcher used Arabic and English dictionaries to analyze the selected models. The findings reveal that achieving synchronization is not directly connected to omission and addition processes that are made by the translator. Omission and addition are natural processes that are frequently used by the translator and they do not have a great impact on synchronization. The findings also reveal that omission and addition processes do not alter the total content of the message, nor do they add to its semantic content. Instead, they help to convey meanings and communicate information to the recipient's language in a more precise manner.
