Abstract

This study aims to examine the morphological differences in the readings of ‘Ali ibn Hamzah al-Kisa’i and Abu Bakr ‘Aasim ibn Abi An-Najud, and to study the effect of the differences on the meanings. The study adopts the descriptive-inductive method in studying and analysing the morphological themes from a total of 278 morphological differences found between the two recitations. The differences are then classified into relevant morphological categories. For the aspect of meaning, these differences are analysed by referring to language books, commentaries, and books of the Qur’anic reading. The research found that the morphological differences occur in both verbs and nouns, with verbs being the highest with 187 differences. The study confirmed that there are strong relations between types of words and meanings in the sense that each type of word refers to a specific meaning. In general, these morphological differences of the two reciters lead to one of the followings: complete difference in meaning, or slight difference, or full agreement of meaning, or partial agreement.
