Abstract

The research investigates the theory of Batinniyah interpretation and the theory of contemporary interpretation. It also exposes the interpretation of Batinniyah in the book of Hakikat Insan (1985) and a contemporary interpretation of Al Fathun Nawa (2011) by Ahmad Laksamana. To achieve these objectives, appropriate research methods were utilized. Through the descriptive approach, the historical approach was used by following the concept of “Takwil” in Islamic culture, “Takwil Batinniyah” and contemporary interpretation of liberalism. The material on the subject from various sources were collected, including history books, articles in magazines, symposiums and conferences papers on this subject in Arabic, Malay and English. Then, through the descriptive approach, the interpretation of Batinniyah and liberalism were described through the words and ideas of Ahmad Laksamana in the examination of Quranic verses and Hadiths in Hakikat Insan and Al Fathun Nawa. The analytical approach was used to analyze the ideas through interpretation of the Quranic verses and Hadiths in the book Hakikat Insan and the analysis of the contemporary interpretation of Quranic verses in Al Fathun Nawa. The critical approach was used to critique Ahmad Laksamana’s ideas which were influenced by the Batiniyyah and liberalism in Al Fathun Nawa. The study primarily showed that the author's approach in the Batinniyah interpretation of Quranic verses and the Prophet's Hadiths in Hakikat Insan are completely contrary to the Quran. In Al Fathun Nawa, it is clear that his ideas in explaining the verses of the Quran are influenced by the principles of liberalism and freedom of rationality. The issue of “Takwil Batinniyah” of the Quran and interpretation influenced by liberal thought leads to the deviation of aqidah. The most important findings in this thesis is the difference between the Hakikat Insan and Al Fathun Nawa especially in terms of methodology. Hakikat Insan highlights the author's approach in the mystical interpretation of Quranic verses and Hadiths which is completely contrary to the meaning of the Quran, while in the book Al Fathun Nawa, his ideas to explain the verses of Quran, his acceptance of the principles of liberalism and freedom of rationality are clear.
