Abstract

This study aims to uncover the key features of Shaykh Mulla Ali al-Qari’s exegetical methodology through an in-depth analysis of his work Anwar al-Qur'an wa Asrar al- Furqan, with a particular focus on its symbolic and spiritual dimensions, and how these interact with the apparent, outward meanings especially in his interpretation of Sūrah al-Fatiḥah and al-Baqarah. The research adopts two principal methodologies: the inductive method, used to trace and compile the textual evidence and interpretative views found throughout the tafsir, particularly those reflecting an esoteric orientation and the analytical method, which enabled the researcher to examine the historical context of al-Qari’s life and critically assess his interpretative approach, sources, and tools. The study concludes that al-Qari employed a reconciliatory exegetical method that harmonises the apparent meanings of the Qur’anic text with inner, symbolic meanings, seeking to uncover the deeper layers of Qur’anic signification. The Qur’anic context emerges as a central interpretive tool in his approach, complemented by a diverse set of interpretive techniques drawn from various jurisprudential, theological, philosophical, and Sufi schools. This endowed his tafsir with remarkable breadth and epistemic richness. The study further reveals a pronounced ethical orientation in his interpretation, in which he viewed the Qur’an as a comprehensive moral system concerned with the purification of the soul, refinement of conduct, and cultivation of values such as truthfulness, mercy, sincerity, patience, and asceticism. The study recommends that serious academic attention be given to this tafsir and that it be integrated into contemporary Qur’anic studies, given its balanced model that unites the outward and inward dimensions, reason and spirituality in Qur’anic understanding. It is anticipated that this research will deepen awareness of reconciliatory methods in tafsir and encourage scholars to explore the potential of symbolic interpretation to address the educational, intellectual, and spiritual needs of contemporary Muslim societies.
