This study focuses on the very last liberal Islam movement in Indonesia known as JIL or Jaringan Islam Liberal (Liberal Islam Network). Although the network emerged in 2001, it is a continuation of an earlier movement initiated by some prominent figures of neo-modernism such as Nurcholish Majdid, Abdurrahman Wahid and their colleagues from the 1970s. Moreover, the root of Liberal Islam could have been found in Indonesia’s President Soekarno who was significantly affected by Muslim secular figures such as Kemal Attaturk of Turkey or Ali Abd Raziq of Egypt. To comprehensively understand the nature of JIL, the study tries to investigate the historical movement of Islamic thought in Indonesia especially during Soeharto’s era. Therefore, this study explores the role of the New Order regime and the basic ideas of the liberal Islam movement during this period that became the foundation of JIL forthcoming activities. The methodology includes the study and analysis of the contributions of a number of institutions in Indonesia, such as the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Islamic State Universities (UIN/IAINs), social and religious organizations of NU and Muhammadiyah and other NGOs. Finally, responses to the liberal Islam movements by certain organization such as MUI, INSISTS, FUUI, ect. are also explored.
