Arabic language became the official language in northern Nigeria before the existence of the colonial masters and they had plans to destroy this culture. People then used Arabic as a medium to understand the religion and to govern the country. They developed poetry skills, which they used to transform some religious school texts into poems, in a way that was easy for reading and memorization. This has caused them to produce Hausa poems, following the Arabic methodology, especially in terms of objective, emotions, lyric, meaning, weight and rhyme. Among them were some poets, who contributed to the development of Hausa poems which were heavily influenced by Arabic and Islamic cultures. That is why we can see many of them using words and vocabulary from the Arabic and Islamic countries, without changing them. This exists among many Hausa poets. Another factor that also helped was the emergence of the reform movement led by Sheikh Othman bin Fodio, who used poem as a tool to bring change among the people. This is how poets contributed in spreading Islam, particularly through Arabic, Hausa and Fullata poems.
