This study aims to investigate the perceptions of academic staff and deans of the role of deans in assessing staff work performance. It also attempts to look into the perceptions of the academic staff and deans of the criteria used and the action taken after assessing staff work performance. The study is based on survey methods with a sample of 302 academic staff and deans of the IIUM. Two sets of instruments; one for the academic staff and the other for the deans, were designed and each of them consisted of two parts. The first part gathered information on demographic variables. The second part gathered information on the perceptions of academic staff and deans of the role of deans, the criteria used and the action taken. The study found that academic staff had lower perceptions of the deans’ role, the criteria used and the action taken compared to the deans. It was found that there was a significant difference in the perceptions of the deans’ role, the criteria used and the action taken by the deans according to the academic staff gender, academic position and Kulliyyah/Centre. The study also found that there was a significant negative relationship between age and teaching experience with the deans’ role, the criteria used and the action taken. Finally, the study recommends need to conduct further studies on academic staff perceptions.
