    Perception of academicians toward zakat administration particularly zakat distribution : the case of Selangor and Kelantan
    (Gombak : International Islamic University Malaysia, 2008, 2008)

    ;
    The issue of effectiveness, efficiency and accountability of Islamic organizations especially State Islamic Religious Council (SIRCs) has raised public concern of how well this organization is being managed. The effects of poor perception towards the SIRC can indirectly affect the collection of zakat where people will look into another alternative, i.e., pay directly to the beneficiaries. This practice will definitely affect the strategic plan of SIRC in reducing the poverty rate and distributing the fund fairly and effectively. In this study, the researcher has examined the perception of academicians in Selangor and Kelantan on SIRCs and its relationship with the attitude of paying zakat directly to the recipients. To achieve such an aim, the researcher developed a questionnaire, which was distributed to 250 respondents (academicians) in both states. The main finding of the study seems to suggest that a good perception on zakat distribution is significantly and positively associated with payment of zakat through the SIRC. It gives the indication that the unfavorable perception on zakat distribution by SIRC will increase the probability of zakat payers to pay zakat directly to the recipients. Some implications of the findings and suggestions are discussed at the end of the study.
