Abstract

This study aims to reveal the effectiveness of a behavioral cognitive counselling program in lowering the psychological stress of a sample of students with visual impairment at Sultan Qaboos University. To achieve this goal the researcher used the quantitative research method and qualitative research method. Quantitative method data were collected using a psychological stress scale on a sample of 16 male, and female students, which was distributed randomly and equally to tow experimental and control groups. Qualitative method data were collected using the individual open interview with (4) members of the experimental group to verify the quantitative method findings. The group counselling program in this study was based on behavioral cognitive theory, which consisted of )11) counselling sessions that were applied at two sessions per week, each of which ranged from 50-75 minutes. After the quantitative data were statistically analyzed, the study found statistically significant differences at an index level (0.05≤ α) between the scores of experimental and control group members at the overall score of the psychological stress scale in favor of the experimental group on post test and follow-up measurements. Qualitative data content analysis also indicated the same outcome, as it included two axes: the opinion of students with visual impairment in the behavioral cognitive indicative program and the experience they gained from the techniques applied in such program. It also pointed to the effectiveness of the counselling group program implemented in this study in lowering the level of psychological stress in the experimental group members.
