Abstract

This study addresses the fundamental issues, and the usage of mobile devices and augmented reality (AR) applications among older people. The continuous emergence of mobile devices and applications presents challenges for older people due to several issues such as poor mobile design, health declining, motivational factors and many more. Furthermore, development of AR applications that use different style of interaction techniques have added difficulties for older people to use the applications. This study was conducted in two stages – Study 1 investigates mobile device usage, and Study 2 explores AR applications engagement. Several qualitative data collection methods were used in the study – interview/focus groups, task performed, observation and persona. The results show that older people used mobile devices for various purposes, and they are active in performing activities related to mobile applications. Older people often influenced to use mobile devices due to the design and functions that are offered, social demand such as children and friends, and economical benefits. Older people also have raised their concern on the use of mobile devices among society. It was revealed that older people have issues in using mobile devices which include physical mobile design, interface and interaction design, mobile content, security, decline in health, internet connection and financial. The findings from Study 2 revealed that older people face several issues with AR applications such as AR interface and interaction design, AR mobile content, decline in health, internet connection and circle of support. However, they exhibited positive attitudes and curiosity in using the applications. The study proposed mobile devices recommendations that consist of mobile device physical, mobile device interface, mobile device interaction, mobile device content and, decline in health and motivation. There are four categories of AR application recommendations - AR content and interaction, AR interface, and decline in health and interaction. It was found that usability and accessibility are important factors in both recommendations for mobile developers to design better mobile devices and applications. This study contributes by recognising the in depth older people’s experiences and enhancing guidelines for mobile devices and AR applications especially for older people. The usability and accessibility of mobile device and AR application, as well as interface and interaction design are substantial to guide mobile developers in improving the technology to encourage independent living among older people. This study is deemed important in assisting researchers and mobile developers in gathering information on the phenomenon of mobile device experience in developing technology that can be useful for older people.
