Abstract

This study attempts to shed light on the concept of Shaikh Nawawi al-Bantani regarding jihad issues through the interpretation book of Marah Labid, as one of the prominent Indonesian Muslim scholars in the forensic sciences, especially in the interpretation. One of the objectives pursued by the researcher in this study was to introduce the personality of Shaikh Nawawi al-Bantani and his life biography, to highlight his approach to interpretation, and to analyze his concept of jihad issues confined to the issue of his positions of jihad in the sense of calling Islam, jihad in the sense of dealing with non-Muslims, Islam and jihad in the sense of patience in the fight against the infidels and the violation of self, and jihad against the loyalty between Muslims and infidels, and jihad against the people of misguidance and animosity and self, and the issue of jihad by the various methods of infidels and hypocrites. In this study, the researcher used the inductive and analytical method, in order to reveal the biography of Shaikh Nawawi al-Bantani and his personality and analyze his opinions and ideas based on the interpretative works and other statements of Muslim scholars. The study reached a number of results with the most important being: Shaikh Nawawi al-Bantani saw these issues as perceived by the Muslim public and their stance, as in the jihad issues related to contemporary jihad, his vision of the Imamate and justice and the well-known command and the prohibition of vice. He also went on to achieve justice, security and stability in the society to fight against the comment and arguments of the ignorants to convince the hypocrites of the teachings of Islam, to remove sedition, and establish Jihad advice and good advice, and jihad to do good and leave taboo. The public may struggle in the cause of jihad through political practice, such as the duty of obedience first, non-obedience to the parents of infidelity, non-loyalty to the violators of Islamic rule, and the fight against deviance in Islamic thought. It is noticeable that these conflicts and similarities between him and the Muslim scholars were the result of his influence on not to imitate the ideas of former scientists, may God have mercy on them all. As for his method of interpretation, he tried to combine the translation (naql) and the mind (‘aql), although the latter aspect predominated over him. His work in interpretation reflects a personal truth. He was an expert in jurisprudence and interpretation. He was known for his lack of rigidity, but his adherence to the evidence during the protest, in the inference.
