Abstract

The two aims of this study are to investigate the psychological, cultural, social, linguistic and educational principles for preparing textbook for the teaching of Arabic as a second language for adults and to evaluate the textbook entitled "Arabic is Our Language: Series of Arabic Language to non-Arab" which is used to teach adult learners at the Institute of Language Advancement (IFLA), Centre for Languages, International Islamic University, Malaysia. The researcher designed the tools for this study and developed them into 3 questionnaires. A total of 72 students at this institute who are studying Arabic as a second language, and ten teachers who use this textbook and four experts in the field were involved in this study. The researcher also benefited from their answers and comments through personal interviews. Information from the respondents were analyzed statistically and frequencies of the answers were tabulated. Meanwhile, answers from the experts were categorized into themes in order to strengthen the data. The researcher reached some valuable results to improve the series of “Arabic is Our Language”. The finding in this study shows that the textbook for teaching Arabic as a second language for adults is necessary with the aim to achieve the religious needs by giving special attention to the communication ability using simple Arabic phrases. The textbook also provides integrated language skills and elements by focusing on reading and speaking skills. It takes into account the translation method of teaching in the lessons, and provides practice in listening and speaking through exercises with colorful graphics and images and contains various exercises, homework and simple tests to measure the ability of language learners.
