Abstract
Al-Imam al-‘Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri is considered one of the widely known and well-respected Islamic scholars inside and outside India. Allah (SWT) has granted him varieties of academic capability. He has developed deep insights into a number of intellectual disciplines and knowledge, including astronomy, astrology, medicine, land-survey, mathematics and Hadith studies. But the most prominent contribution for which he earned his fame in the academia is his work “Fayd al-Bari” in the field of Hadith interpretation. It represents his commentary of al-Bukhari’s Hadith work “Sahih”, comprising summary of “Fath al-Bari” by Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani and that of “’Umdat al-Qari” by Badr al-Din al-‘Ayni, besides his own new commentary of Hadith along with critical overtones. This thesis is an attempt to have deep insights into Anwar Shah Kashmiri’s highly intellectual contribution to the commentary of Hadith and his position among his contemporaries as well as the methodology he applied in hadith commentary. For this task the researcher has used three methodologies: inductive, analytical and critical. The conclusions arrived at in this research, among others, are: Anwar Shah Kashmiri deserves greater recognition in the Islamic world due to his unique contributions. His methodology in Hadith commentary is unique and his arguments for new interpretation of Hadith are quite novel and highly strong.
