Abstract

This research deals with the language of Qur’anic dialogues from the pragmatic view and their effectiveness on Malaysian readers specializing in Quranic studies. This research has taken a multi-approach; a descriptive analytical study and a field study. The descriptive analytical study aimed to extract characteristics of the Qur’anic dialogues, as well as their pragmatic features, then employed the four pragmatic elements: deixis, presupposition, conversational implicature and speech act theory in analyzing samples of Qur’anic dialogues. The field study aimed to study the effectiveness of Qur’anic dialogues on Malaysian specialists in Qur’anic studies from the pragmatic view. Data were analyzed by using SPSS version 20.0, and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient was used in measuring the strength of association between parametric data. Besides, Spearman’s Correlation Coefficient was also employed for non-parametric data. The study concludes with some valuable findings, and at the forefront of it all, the study has demonstrated the effectiveness of the pragmatic approach in raising the level of readers’ understanding and comprehension of Qur’anic dialogues. Therefore, it is recommended that this approach should be taught to students who are specializing in Qur’anic studies and then, adopted by them in order to strenghten their capability in analyzing Qur’anic dialogues. Furthermore, it is suggested that an advance study should be conducted using a comparative method to investigate a hypothesis which states that there are significant differences between the previous group and the group of Malaysian readers specializing in Arabic language regarding their pragmatical efficiency in dealing with Qur’anic dialogues.
