Abstract

This study presents the example of design, implementation, and evaluation procedures for developing multimedia for teaching Arabic vocabulary for non-Arabic students at the beginner’s level by using one of the applications available on the Internet namely, Moodle. The researcher used the Moodle as a platform for multimedia development that compromise different types of multimedia e.g. pictures, audio, video, and animations. This study employs an analysis, experimental and evaluation method in conducting its research procedures. The theoretical foundation of the study was profoundly based on the theory of social constructivism proposed by Vygotsky (1978), theory of second language acquisition by Krashen (1984), theory of multimedia learning by Mayer (2001) and ADDIE instructional model by Dick & Carey (1990). 8 subjects matter experts, 2 Arabic Language lecturers and 140 level-one students from the Center for Foundation Studies, International Islamic University Malaysia had participated in the study which was carried out during the semester one and two of 2012/2013 academic year. The researcher also discussed in details the steps of operating the needs analysis and tools for evaluating the success of the program. The outcome of the students’ motivations analysis proposed the use multimedia program as a tool is for enhancing their Arabic vocabulary as they are found to be highly motivated and engaged in the learning process which in turn contributes positively to their learning attainment. The results of the vocabulary tests also show the success of multimedia program in the process of teaching and learning Arab vocabulary, since most of the students obtained good results in their pre and post-tests conducted throughout the study. The study concludes that multimedia program can be used by all non-Arabic students regardless of their categories; new intake students or repeaters.
