Abstract
This study aims to identify the satisfaction level of a sample of students with the services provided by the Student Counseling Center at Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman. To achieve the aims of this study, the researcher has adopted the qualitative descriptive approach and gathered data by using the interview tool. The study sample consists of (10) students: i.e. (5) males and (5) females from the Student Counseling Center at Sultan Qaboos University, who belong to different colleges, majors and academic years. The representative sample was purposively selected based on certain demographic variables including gender, college, and academic year. The qualitative analysis approach was followed to analyze the data resulted from the interviews. The study resulted, most importantly, that all respondents have dealt with the Student Counseling Center at the University and spoke highly of the multiple services provided to the students there. The study showed various reasons that led students to join the Student Counseling Center. Mainly, the students want to get rid of the exams-related stress and anxiety, need someone to help them organize their time and improve their academic performance, want to learn various and new skills, and to overcome the learning obstacles and challenges. Furthermore, the study indicated that students never hesitate to join the Student Counseling Center because they know all about achievements of the Center and how it supports the students in all academic, social, and family aspects, in particular. The study has also shown that there is a relationship between the psychological stress and motivation as the students’ motivation level goes down whenever their stress goes higher. Therefore, the students’ academic achievement goes lower. The study also showed a positive relationship between family problems and students drop out of the university. The study has also pointed to the importance and effectiveness of the methods and strategies adopted by the center in providing the support and assistance for students needed 1) to get rid of the psychological stresses, 2) to raise the academic performance in general, and 3) to overcome negative anxiety, in particular. The study proposed several necessary recommendations, among others, to develop the Student Counseling Center's services provided to the university community, follow up the students who suffer from psychological stress and poor academic performance, and provide them with counseling services to help them reduce their psychological stress and improve their academic performance.
